Bruce Newman, M.D.
Dr. Bruce Newman was Medical Director of American Red Cross Blood Services in Detroit for almost 22 years until he retired (October 2014). He has been a prolific writer on donor vasovagal reactions and donor arm complications throughout his career. In June 2015, Dr. Newman spoke in Norway about “Strategies to Reduce Vasovagal Donor Reactions”. He has extensive experience with implementation of projects, and he believes we can do a much better job on prevention of donor reactions and donor injuries. The suggested changes are based on the literature and his extensive pragmatic experience with blood drives. Dr. Newman believes a new approach is needed to maximally reduce donor reactions.
Jan Deters, MT(ASCP)SBB
Jan Deters worked for American Red Cross Blood Services for 32 years in numerous positions with increasing responsibility. She was most recently the Director of Customer Service and Support for the National Testing Laboratories (NTL). She successfully managed new customer development as well as existing customer issues. Prior to that she was the Director of Client Services for the Detroit NTL for almost 5 years. In addition, she was the Manager of Problem Management (process improvement) at the Southeastern Michigan
Region and prior to that Jan held positions in Quality Assurance, the Reference Laboratory and Technical Education. Jan has lectured for an SBB program as well as presented at Michigan Association of Blood Bank seminars/workshops. She has a particular interest in quality, compliance, training and communication.
